Release time:2022-11-08

On November 5th 2022, the 5th China International Import Expo (CIIE for short) was inaugurated at National Exhibition Centre (Shanghai), focusing the whole world’s attention on the “clover”. Professor Jun Qin, Executive Dean at FISF and Professor in Finance, was invited to visit China Global Television Network (CGTN for short), focusing on the innovation highlights and significance of the 5th CIIE. Meanwhile, an article published on The Shanghai Mercury under Qian’s name analyzed the “Chinese opportunities” brought by CIIE from multiple aspects and analyzed the current mission and duties of CIIE, which was reprinted by “Xuexi.cn”.

As CIIE entered its fifth year, an increasing number of CIIE exhibitors have picked up speed in turning into investors, taking root and sprouing in China, a fertile land for investment. In this year’s CIIE, a major highlight is the new special zone of investors transformed from exhibitors. The expo covers an area of over 6000 square meters with more than 30 exhibitors participating, including Shiseido, AstraZeneca and many other world-famous enterprises.

“The innovation of turning exhibitors into investors fully demonstrates the strong “overflow effect” of CIIE, and definitively confirms that CIIE is an international feast with constant influence.” Professor Jun Qian stated in the on-site interview of CGTN. Overseas exhibitors entering the Chinese market via the window of CIIE would find that this vast blue sea of a market had steady demands for their products, so the next step they would take should be establishing or expanding their production lines in China, which then brought new investment opportunities. Within the five successive years of CIIE, the originally dispersed demands have formed a steady demand flow, creating investment opportunities in an endless stream. Whether in the manufacturing industry or the service industry, foreign enterprises all increased investment.

As the 5th CIIE opened its curtain, the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference was also being held in Egypt. More people are calling for the international community to accelerate their pace in dealing with climate change, and this year’s CIIE was also filled with such green and environmental principles. As can be seen in the exhibits, about 90% of the exhibited automobiles in the auto exhibition area were new energy vehicles.

“‘Green development’ is one of the core topics of this year’s CIIE. CIIE has become a key platform for car manufacturers in Europe, Asia and America to display new models to the whole world. And China is on its way to acting as the leading force of both the demand side and the supply side of in the global electric vehicle industry. Apart from new cars, exhibitors also presented whole-new technology. CIIE will not only play a leading role in promoting green and environmental protection in the automobile field but also extend its practice of sustainable development to more fields.” according to Professor Jun Qian’s analysis, who also added that as the gateway for China to open up, the choice of Shanghai as the host of CIIE is an explicit indication of China’s determination to “further expand the opening-up and make the great Chinese market a big global opportunity”. In CIIE, enterprises around the world have a timely understanding of the new trends in the Chinese market and the new demands of Chinese consumers, just like the green and environmental products highly regarded this year. By hosting this open platform of CIIE, China is building a win-win stage for the world.

The 5th CIIE is the first major international exhibition held after the 20th CPC National Congress. It gives a chance for the world to witness an open and harmonious China that has stepped out on a new journey of building a modern socialist China in an all-round way. The new blueprint of future development pictured by the 20th CPC National Congress has also enhanced the confidence of the many international exhibitors in China’s future development.

In his article of “Highlight Moments” brought by CIIE for Foreign Brands to Enter China, Professor Jun Qian noted that the report of the 20th CPC National Congress proposed to “improve the quality and level of international circulation”, which required China to actively participate in the formulation of global rules on one hand and make a voice on common problems facing all mankind on the other. Such a voice is not just for ourselves, but for the rights and interests of emerging market countries and developing countries in global affairs. Here CIIE can make a great contribution.

Jun Qian: Highlight Moments” brought by CIIE for Foreign Brands to Enter China

This year, against the background of many challenges and uncertainties facing the global economy, the 5th China International Import Expo was successfully held as expected, marking China’s action on its commitment of promoting high-level opening-up.

The Chinese economy is persistent and possesses high endurance. In 2018 when anti-globalization emerged, China held the first CIIE to inform the world of its strong determination to carry on the expansion of opening-up and firmly support economic globalization. Over the years the global situation has been complex and volatile, but China managed to hold CIIE for 5 years in a row, displaying a strong proof that China will not close its already opened door. And Shanghai, one of the most open cities in China, is supposed to be a window to present and lead China’s high-quality opening-up.

Indeed, through CIIE global exhibitors and the countries they are from can see a country full of market opportunities. From the bluefin tuna weighing over 300kg from Atlantic to the soft cute alpaca toys from Peru, many “hit” exhibits at CIIE have achieved transformation to goods. Countless cases can imply that the high-profile “window” of CIIE may bring “highlight moments” for foreign brands to enter the Chinese market.

From the first session to the fifth, CIIE has been improving, inviting exhibitors and visitors in an increasingly wide range of industries and more and more kinds of exhibits, from manufacturing to high-end technology, from products to services. In the most recent two years, CIIE has even included artwork. With the constantly extending coverage and depth, CIIE is not an exhibition targeting certain industries alone, but a large sector that comprehensively penetrates into the Chinese market and displays "China's opportunities". Despite the epidemic challenges in the past two years, China still has a huge consumer market.

“Chinese opportunities” are also shown on the other side. So far China has applied a higher-level opening-up, opening its door to multiple links of the industry chain and supply chain. In other words, the successful organization of CIIE in the fifth year is a full display to the whole world of China’s definition of opening-up, which means a higher-level opening-up that is stereoscopic and omni-directional.

CIIE with higher-level opening-up is also improving. Firstly, the exhibits and exhibition forms have advanced with the times. Many exhibits manifest the newest and highest technologies, and exhibitors are participating in a more scientific way. For example, in the technical equipment area, the metaverse way of participation came up this year. Also, the exhibited contents have become more and more “synchronized” with the high-quality development of China’s economy. As we can see, the two hot topics this year are digital economy and “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”. As a matter of fact, what CIIE shows to the world is not only what China needs but also what China can do and what its future development heads to. China will constantly make new development to provide the world with new opportunities, help build an open world economy and better benefit people of all countries.

The Report of the 20th CPC National Congress proposed to “improve the quality and level of international circulation” and that “high-quality development is the top priority of building an all-around, modern, socialist China”. The Chinese-style modernization and high-quality development refer to the improvement of the quality and level of international circulation when it comes to international trade.

In order to improve the quality and level of international circulation, it is required that we take a more active part in the formulation of global rules on one hand and that China make a voice on common problems facing all mankind on the other. Such a voice is not just for ourselves, but for the rights and interests of emerging market countries and developing countries in global affairs. This is our responsibility to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Here CIIE can make a great contributions. For example, as for one of the most urgent issues currently facing the world, environmental protection, we can see multiple energy-saving and low-carbon-content technology and exhibits at CIIE this year, and topics of green development appeared on several forums. This is the responsibilities that CIIE should bear.
