Release time:2025-01-21

With Donald Trump formally inaugurated as the President of the United States, posing uncertainties in Sino-US trade policies in front of us, the export of Chinese goods to the US may possibly face higher tariffs. Both Chinese enterprises and local enterprises and consumers in the US are making advanced preparations. As National Retail Federation of the United States estimated, adding tariffs might lead to an increase in expenditure by 6.4 to 10.9 billion dollars in household electrical appliances alone. So many US enterprises stocked up for a year beforehand while consumers swept shelves crazily. There even emerged videos on local social media teaching people how to stock up.

Professor Introduction

Jun Qian

Executive Dean of Fudan International School of Finance

Professor in Finance

Regarding this, Jun Qian, Executive Dean of FISF and Professor in Finance, said, “over 90% of the tariffs increased by the US would be borne by US importers and consumers, which might go beyond US importers’ capabilities.” During Trump’s first term, he added tariffs on China three times, totaling 550 billion dollars. At that time, such tariff policy did not bring harm to China, but helped China clear its inventory, while US enterprises transferred corresponding costs to consumers, leading to a greater trade deficit. This time, though in a higher pitch, this could neither shake China’s leading status in manufacturing nor solve the problems existing in US itself, as commonly believed by several US analysts. Professor Jun Qian added, “The US has recognized that it was impossible for it alone to manufacture all the consumer goods, so adding tariffs on the whole globe will undoubtedly raise domestic commodity prices, which is not a good thing for the US economy. Additionally, this means there will be more opportunities for China and other regions.”
